Law & Ethics

During the summer in between the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, Rhode Island enacted The Student Journalist's Freedom of Expression Act, which gave student journalists at the high school and college level the right to express and exercise their freedoms of speech and of the press in both school sponsored and non-school sponsored media. It also protects student journalists from being punished by administration in regards to the Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier precedent. This legislation is part of a larger nationwide movement for student journalist's rights, known as the "New Voices" movement, after the John Wall New Voices Act in North Dakota, which was passed in 2015.

Upon our return to school in August 2017, we at The Lion's Roar realized that we needed a written statement that not only explained our mission, but our rights and guidelines as well. This fall, under the guidance of advisor Mrs. Doreen Picozzi, I put together the document embedded to the right: the Lincoln High School Editorial Statement. It has been approved by our Principal, Mr. Kevin McNamara, and our Superintendent, Mrs. Georgia Fortunato.
