On this page you will find links to work I have done after submitting my portfolio to the JOY contest. These pieces are from March, April, and May 2018.

Should 16 Year Olds Be Allowed to Vote?

The final Reflection segment of the year comprised of just this one piece, discussing the pros and cons of allowing sixteen year olds to vote, as well as a general call to action for young people to get out and be politically active. Published in the May 2018 issue of The Lion's Roar.

School Safety: It Takes a Village

Following the March for Our Lives and the National Student Walkouts that accompanied that event in response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine's Day, I spoke with the principal of my high school in order to get a sense of how safe we were at Lincoln High School, and to seek comment on the recent walkout. It wound up being a conversation about the topic of school safety as a whole, and probably the most intense and emotionally draining interview I've done to date. This went unpublished due to other more prevalent stories popping up for the March issue.

State Senator Resigns Amid Video Voyeurism, Extortion Charges

In early 2018 a Rhode Island state Senator resigned and was charged with some pretty serious felony charges. As a political junkie (and someone who was employed as a House page at the time), this piece was very interesting to write and research. This went unpublished.

Reflection: Affirmative Action

This editorial was written as part of the Reflection series that The Lion's Roar ran during my senior year, in which every month two writers (usually myself and fellow staff writer Amanda Ryan) would each write an editorial defending one side of a controversial issue. Published in the March 2018 issue of The Lion's Roar.

What's the Deal with the Gym?

During the period of heavy, heavy rain this spring, Lincoln High School's main gym suffered greatly. For a while, however, nobody really knew what was going on, so I spoke with the Principal as well as several gym teachers to figure out the root of the problem. Published in the April 2018 issue of The Lion's Roar.

Supreme Court "Rides the Circuit" to LHS

The RI Supreme Court heard arguments at Lincoln High School on April 4, 2018. I covered the visit and spoke with several of the attorneys afterwards and got the story out by that Friday for the April issue (despite having a concussion and feeling dead). Published in the April 2018 issue of The Lion's Roar.

Lincoln High School Holds ALICE Drill

In the midst of a renewed push for school safety nationwide, Lincoln High School held their first ever ALICE drill, training students and staff on what to do in the event of an intruder/active shooter situation. Published in the May 2018 issue of The Lion's Roar.

Lincoln Public Schools Welcome New Superintendent

Lincoln's beloved Superintendent Mrs. Georgia Fortunato announced her retirement in early 2018 after thirty-seven years in the district, the last eleven as superintendent. Her replacement is Dr. Lawrence Filippelli, who has worked in Scituate schools for the last nineteen years. I met with Dr. Filippelli and profiled him for the final issue of the year. Published in the May 2018 issue of The Lion's Roar.

Ellen Comes Out, 21 Years Later

A brief editorial I wrote for the anniversary of Ellen Degeneres' landmark coming out in 1997. Published in the May 2018 issue of The Lion's Roar.
